Despite his coach not making it to the event, Dupe was still able to secure victory and carry the Super-light weight (165lb 75kg) belt back home to Martinque. In an exclusive interview posted below, Dupe goes into detail about the unexpected adversity he faced leading up to his fight.

In the co- main event, Yohann Dupe of Antilles Mixed Martial Arts, Martinque faced local MMA fighter Anthony Joseph of Southern Warriors MMA, Trinidad & Tobago. Joseph giving up a significant reach stuck to his game plan and was able to close the distance and work his grappling. Joseph was able to score the takedown but Dupe secured a triangle to put an end to the contest. Dupe taking the 165lb championship belt by submission.

What was your mindset leading up to the fight and how did it affect your preparations?

“Having won a national title in Switzerland on June 1st,(The French MMA Championships were held in Geneva for legality reasons) I was rather on a good start and therefore confident to tackle this fight. The fact that I knew my opponent was particularly good at wrestling didn’t destabilize me too much either. So I focused my preparation on what I had learned, in order to perfect what I already knew how to do and maintain my training routine.”

What were your initial emotions and thoughts as you won the bout?

“First of all, joy, necessarily, especially after the big disappointment of before the battle…( I found myself alone in Trinidad, because the teammate who was supposed to coach me couldn’t do it because of problems with the airline, warm-up with the Irish staff present and bandages from a very friendly trinidad coach; many thanks to them and especially to Mathieu from the Rough House who was in my corner, and whom I met two days earlier) A little unsettling, because it had never happened after all these years of competition.”

If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?

“I am aware that I didn’t show my best technical face to the audience present, this was due to the problems that occurred before the show, I knew that it would have systematically taken me to the ground, and even if it didn’t bother me at all in itself, I would have preferred to do the show differently, a little more striking for example.”

What are your plans for the next 6 months to a year where fighting is concerned?

“In the short term, I am supposed to join the French MMA amateur selection for the World Championships to be held in Singapore at the end of November, where I will fight in -77Kg, my usual weight in competition, nothing has been confirmed to me by the president of the federation for the moment so I am preparing as usual to overcome any eventuality.”

Who is your biggest inspiration in the sport?

“The modern MMA is rich in examples to follow, obviously I want to first mention the name of Jon Jones who, despite his setbacks, remains an absolute gifted man. Complete in all combat compartments. Nurmagomedov’s rigour is amazing even if his morphology is totally different from mine. Other examples Adesanya, Ferguson.”

How do you think the average Joe can benefit from joining a mma class?

“MMA is an ultimate sport by definition, the average person who is interested in it will necessarily benefit like any sport, physically of course and especially, mentally, for the rigour that it is necessary to have to learn and apply all the techniques that we are likely to learn. Even if it is not a “traditional” martial art, it instills values of knowing what you can do to others and therefore allows a better control of your person in any situation, especially when it gets hot! ”

What do you think needs to be done to make people more familiar with mma throughout the Caribbean?

“ Well, this question seems so simple on paper and yet so hard to put in place: I think that greater collaboration is needed between the Caribbean islands, it can start with sport and then be the case at many other levels. We (the French islands) were clearly behind in this matter, which forced us, competitors, to go abroad to express ourselves, but with the very next legalization expected (1st quarter 2020) this should already be a good thing in this sense. And inevitably the nerve of the war, more funding from the ruling classes in this sport, which is nowadays a global phenomenon.”

In what way can you see yourself “giving back” in order to help in the development of MMA in your country?

“We are clearly precursors of this sport in our island, and I am proud of that, and after all these years, thanks to the performances in the Caribbean and Europe, the simple fact of having it reported in the various media, at each of our outings, helps to democratize this sport, to which a bad image always sticks in the collective minds of people.”

If you could choose one person to fight, who would it be and why?

“No time to choose, I take whoever is there lol, but more seriously, each fight is beneficial in both defeat and victory for the lover of this sport that I am.”

Any closing comments?

“Many thanks to Rhage Promotions and Adam De Silva for the invitation, the quality of the organization is surprising for an organization that is only at its second event, Trinidad and Tobago remains a country that I really appreciate very much and hope to return to discover it more fully and to be able to blend into this magnificent cultural mix.”
